Hello, I am a newcomber to the board and I had a couple of questions. My brother and I are planning a weekend trip around the third week in March and were wondering about possibly fishing at Cedar. We are a couple of hours away and have heard some good things about the lake. I was wondering when the fish start turning on? We fish a lot of lakes were we are from but we don't have any big fish lakes that are worth a crap. I think even if it's cold we should be able to troll up some nice blues on skipjack or shad. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Alsept1 is the resident Cedar expert.
I do know that this lake stocks trout for cold weather and I'm sure the fish there have developed a taste for them. As for my opinion, along with Cozy-Dale, Cedar is in the top two of productive local lakes IF you know how to fish it and where the holes are.

Surefoot is right about that. The lake is open though. If you wanted you could fish it a day then go to cozydale.

OK can't wait. Maybe you should start to practice your netting skills now so you will be ready for March 14 lol.

I wish we could make it up on the 14th but the only days we are going to be able to make it up are the 16th-18th. We plan on fishing Cedar and maybe Cozy. I think we will try Cedar first and if we have any luck we will problably stay there. Do they allow camping at Cedar? I caught my biggest fish trolling a cut rainbow (41 lb flathead). Any suggestions on baits or spots would be greatly appreciated. It's always hard trying to learn a new lake but we usually do alright.

Try fishing off the concret wall ,right across the bridge, out by the bouys or try next to the huge bubbler, after the first bouy. For bait i wolud go with shad or just cut bait. Not sure though, dont fish much when the water is cold.

First of all thanks for the help, now I have a place to start. How big is the lake at Cedar? I normally fish with 10' rods but I also have 12 footers as well. Does it take a long cast to hit the spots you mentioned? Is this lake also stocked with channels or is it mainly a big fish lake? Have you heard of anybody catching any nice fish when it is still cold? Sorry to keep bugging you but anything I can get sorted out now will hopefully help us to be more productive. Again thanks for any info.

Well if your going to fish off the concrete wall you are going to have to cast pretty far but i was able to get it out there with 10 footers but it can be tough sometimes. But the other spot would be easily reached with a 10 footer. This lake really starts to turn on in mid to late April.
