Hi guys, I have been catfishing for along time...And I need some help on fishing paylakes...Just started it and I have been to 5 different lakes...fished 12 hrs each time and caught a total of one fish, it was a 24-lb shovel and I had to fish on the bottom to catch it...Problem is I never see anyone else catching fish either, I always here I should have been there last week as they were really hitting..I did not start till the end of June so I would asume they slow down in paylkes during the heat of the summer? I have been to castaway, Willards, and paradise 2, along with heidies, and one called cats...The action was very slow everywhere...Should I just fish paylakes during the spring and fall?

You can catch fish in the summer, but i would say that the bite does seem to slow a little when it is hot like this. I would not get discouraged just yet either. It took me a long time to start catching fish and I am just now starting to get into some decent sized ones. If I were you i would pick one lake that you like allot and that regularly produces fish. Fish it allot until you know it real well. What i mean by no it is no the depths, where the holes are and what structure is where. Get to know the regulars and start asking as many questions as you can. Also, try different baits and see what works and when. Hope this helps. Peace Elijah

ahhhh i dunno about you or this post but your not makin any sense. Fish diff lakes. No offense, but your post is the one that doesn't make sense to me. Are you saying that people new to our sport should fish MORE than 5 lakes? If I had this guys luck, I sure as heck wouldn't keep going to different lakes. Heck, maybe he should start up carp fishing! Good luck flathunter. Keep in mind that flatheads are hard to catch and you have to have the right mind set: patience. I once went 10 trips without a flathead at my local paylake. I actually went to mass and prayed for a fish the next time out. God must be a paylake and flathead fan, I caught a 48 # flathead the next time out. Also, flathunter I am prov sure since your new to catfishing, that your prob using equipment that is more geared towards carp. It took me a while to understand that you need good equipment. I would recommend the Tiger Spinning outfits by Shakespeare. Walmart sells them for about $20-30. I used to use Zebco 33's but I now love these Tiger outfits. Spent the extra $ now and be confident in your equipment. Good luck and welcome to out sport.

Josh, he seems to be making sense to me, maybe you should learn to read. As far as equipment goes, most guys use baitcasting reels and 10-11 foot bait casting rods. What set up do you have? Also, what is your rig like? (straw, swivel, sinker size, hook size ect.) I ask just cause you don't want to be one of those guys with a 2 foot long straw and tower for a floater. I once went 10 trips without a flathead at my local paylake. I actually went to mass and prayed for a fish the next time out. God must be a paylake and flathead fan, I caught a 48 # flathead the next time out. I have never been skunked even twive in a row. God must like me more than you. On second thought, us catching fish is probably the last thing God cares about, except maybe spelling bees. Peace Elijah

After i read that post i got to wondering if there was a patron saint of fishing and sure enouph. St. Zeno of verona. Guess i been doing it wrong all these years. All i need to do to catch fish is light a candle to this guy. P.S. This is all in Jest. Hope no one gets offended.

Flathunter,
Did your success get better last year? I prayed to Whisker the Albino Flathead that is kept on display over ar Martha's House of Bait in Johnnystown, East Virgina that your fishing luck would change. I sacrificed a two nosed Rockbass and proceeded to call out the sweet name of Hector while dancing the jig in hopes that you would find fish. I have no pride in those that eat their own flesh and blood. The two swords will collect dust until the dog finds it's bone. Be brave my friend, paylake season is here. We must fish the mighty Lakes of Rainbow in Fairborn, as the new owners seem nice. Bark no more, my unfriendly pig, as we will fight the good fight. Onward we go.
