Does anyone know how to keep shad alive by using salt. I was talking with Treva at catman blues and she told me to add a hand full of salt to the water form my shad. When I asked what kind she said the same kind you find out side of a grocery store. I would think that would just be plain rock salt. Does this sound right?

you can use rock salt and sometimes even table salt. Personally I use a combo of the shad keeper in the jar and you can get salt at the pet store , obviously your not gonna turn it into a saltwater reef tank but, a lot of freshwater fish (tropical pet kind) and indigenous fish respond well to low salt levels in their water for slime just like snake513 said and other health qualities, which of course healthy lively bait= better action.

yeah i just use shad keeper and a few of the salt rocks. it basically eats the slime away so that the shad dont get it on there gills and suffocate themselves.

THE SALT ACTUALLY MAKES THE WATER "SOFT" LIKE A WATER SOFTENER UNIT 4 YOUR HOME. AND ONLY USE NON IODIZED SALT. IT HELPS KEEP THE SLIME ON THEM SO THEY DONT LOSE SCALES WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY KILL EM IF NOT FILTERED.

ok ok the salt you need to use is pickling salt... i think a table spoon for every 2 gallons... When shad get over crowded and stressed their noses turn red its not from running into things its from stress.... The salt helps to keep their scales from coming off, it kinds helps glue their scales to their body... Losing scales is a big reason they die... And you shouldnt handle them with dry hands dip your hands in water first...

when i was at sanntee copper last year they had live shad in big concrete square tanks they where like 20 feet long and 5 feet wide when we asked how he kept them from getting red nose he pointed to a wall stacked with water softener salt. i've been using it ever since ill put about an 8oz drinking glass full in my 35gallon drum i've never seen anything work as good as this i can keep about 30 large shad alive for weeks and not lose one. also a another trick that guy showed us was to keep the foam down using coffee creamer i use about 2 tble spoons in my tank and it takes care of the foam.

Go to a feed store and buy a 50 lb bag of pure feed salt for cattle for around $6.00. That is what most of us fish haulers use on our trucks. It does help them stay alive longer and keeps the scales fom coming off of them. IT SURE IS... AND ITS MOSTLY SALT. FEED SALT WORKS BEST BUT YOU CAN BUY REGULAR NON IODIZED SALT AT ANY STORE FOR LESS THAN $1. how much is the feed salt? i figure i could get some from betel feed store. also, how much and where can you get water softner salt?

I used aquarium salt from the pet store. 1 table spoon for every 10 galons of water. I put one table spoon in my tank and added a little better bait. My shad were kicking for 24 hours straight, I used every one of them. None of them died , at least not until I wanted them to, LOL , Off with there heads. Thanks for the tips, everyone..
