Here's my question about braiding leaders... You use the Fluorocarbon leader line because it is less visible and it has less stretch. This is what I always use. But if you braid them together and say your using 30lb line, that seems to me that you would nullify the visiblity factor of the fluorocarbon line. I mean that has to be one thick ass leader, isn't it? But my main question is how do you braid the line; and how the hell can you make a polamer knot with that thick of line? Or do you use some other knot?
I don't know. I have personally always used a fluorocarbon leader that is 5# less than my main line. So usually 30# Mamai's Diamond for main, and a 25# Fluorocarbon leader (I forget the name, but I know that it is NOT Seaguard). Just make sure you tie good polamer knots(make sure you have the line WET) - and I usually set my drag at 8-10 pounds. Just make sure if you use a smaller leader that you set your drag to your leader weight and not your main line weight. But if you go with Chris's technique of braiding the leader, I would make sure you set your drag for your main line.
I don't see too many people that use smaller leader than main line so maybe I am doing it wrong here... But I can honestly say that I have not broke a line in about 3 years. But I am also always checking my line and leaders, re-tying after big fish, retying if there are any abrasions, always checking my drag, etc. And I make sure to take my time and make the best knots I can make. It's worked for me... I hope my novel might have helped someone, lol.
