I use baitcasters and spinning (open face) I use baitcasters because of the clickers, but the new Okuma's have bait clickers on the open face reels now too. I am much more accurate with open face reels, whether fishing for cats or bass, or walleye, or anything. However the brute force of baitcasters is another reason I love them for catfish and muskie as well. They have the power needed to fight big fish.
However if you can't cast a baitcaster....you might want to go with what works for you. Took me about 2 years to fully get baitcasting down. The larger baitcasting reels are a lot easier to cast than the low profile bass fishing ones.
But I am going to go with Baitcasters as my choice for big cats.

For paylakes the baitcaster is a better reel. But Spinning reel; has there purpose and the higher priced spinning reels are very nice to fish with. bait caster for casting and leverage, if you get a spinning it will be big and bulky like a shimano baitrunner, but good reel

They do have a lot of spinning reels that have bait clickers on them. Gear ratio is better on a baitcaster though for more power, however you can get them on a spinning reel too, but they tend to be more bulky.
