The Blue/Channel Hybrid is becoming popular among commercial catfish farmers. They have major advantages over a regular channel. Auburn University developed the techniques to create the hybrid. Advantages (as opposed to 'pure' channels): 30-100% increase in growth rate 10-50% higher disease resistance When 100% of channel catfish die from low dissolved oxygen, only 33% of the hybrids die $700-$2,800 more profit/acre They would be a lot cooler to stock in a pond as opposed to channel cats. Lake Erie stocked thousands of pounds of blue and channel hybrids about twenty years ago. If you buy any wild channels from Erie chances are you will get em in your lake. Out of six loads stocked last year here at Reds we got about 20 hybrids. The guy that stocks channels from me pointed them out to me last year. I called them blues and he then showed the differences. I was told that channels and blues will crossbreed I never researched it before. That will give me something to do on the next 5 cold and rainy days ahead!!
