I usually get my shad at state lakes, usually Stone Lick or Cowan. Its pretty cold right now, and the shad won't be near the surface.

Yeah i don't plan on trying to get some until end of March or beginning of April. Where do you usually throw your net at when you go to Stonelick surefoot?

i get mine from a private pond along with warmouths and baby carp. best bet with those shad is to get them and freeze em and try not to handle them much. if we are going just to catch and freeze we usually just dump then in a ziplock baggy right at the lake. also heuston woods has a good shad supply along the docks.

Around the boat dock is decent at stonelick, watch out i've lost a cast net or 2 there(lot's of snags). If you have another person with you and you add enough rope to your net, toss it off the bridge into the spillway. Always tons of shad in there. but it takes skills. Which I haven't mastered yet. Watch out for traffic though, ppl fly down that road.

I almost forgot, if you catch shad(this is for newbies)........... Make sure you only put shad with shad and nothing else. The oil rom the shad will kill your other bait. Also use a round bucket, for sum odd reason when I put them in a square cooler they all die quickly. If you still don't have luck keeping them alive, go to bass pro and buy Shad keep. I've had shad stay alive in my 5 gal bucket for a cpl days using that stuff.

toss it off the bridge into the spillway Thats what I do. I use a smaller (3') net because I can throw it much further. I add rope and wing it out toward the dam. The only problem is, that the spillway gets 'fished' for shad often. Its best to go after a rain (more shad gets flushed over), but not when the dam looks like niagara falls! People fly down that road as python mentioned, and you have to respect anyone that is fishing there. This is also a great place to get bait size bluegill, warmouth, crappie, and rock bass. I never, ever carry a cast net if I am transporting those types of fish.

back to where python was talking about using a round bait take. The reason is that shad will nose into the corners and dround them selves, that why you use a round tank or bucket.. Shad swim in circles if you have niticed when you look at them in you bait take.Just thought you would like to know.
