Doing a lot of reading on this site and other places - this year i want to try for some blues and shovels....( i have been fishing for channels in the past).....some place i've read say need to use big baits 6"-10" fish...other places, including this site, folks catch them on nightcrawlers, shiners, fish heads, etc......lots of good fishermen on this site... .any opinions? They will hit it all. Just have to throw the right thing at the right time.

I agree with Randy I have two 12 foot daiwa beef stix with eagle claw enduresand 30# test on them. On my third pole I use a 11 foot daiwa eliminator and an abu garcia 6500 with 30#.

what i use for bait usually if im after a blue is a nice fresh trout head, or if trout arent available i use cut skip jack, shad, ect. cut/dead bait has worked best for me.

gold fish, israeli carp, creek chubs and suckers are probably my favorites but I will throw just about anything at them blue gill warmouth leaches and if all else fails go back to the basics NIGHT CRAWLERS. but I have caught most of my biggest on smaller baits thats not saying bigger baits dont work they just havent produced for me

blues and shovels will hit big bait and small bait just depends on the time of year and shovels rarely bite in the winter mostly warm months and then blues are active all year round unless its 100 degrees or 0 degrees then there straight on the bottom but blues will hit a big variety of live and cut bait, shovels are more live bait eaters in my opion, and yea you better have some bigger poles than channel poles because shovels and blues fight much better than channels.

Was fishing the miami right by where dry ridge and E Miami connect. Fishing the bottom with a crawler. Ended up landin a 2 1/2 lb White Bass. So i said what the hell all i got is crawlers any way. So i started carving some tennis ball size chunks and busted a 20 lb blue right away. Continued catching throughout the day and some of the night.
