peen reels are a great reel and have been a leading reel in the saltwater market for a long long time. they work great for catfishing as well. they are a lil hard to control under casting them. because they are primary designed for a trolling reel not so much a bait casting reel.

i like penn reels.but the jigmaster 500 is way to big thats the only 1 i have. it was made in 1958 and still works great.3.5 to 1 so it is slow i need like 5oz wt on that rod to cast well.if i ever get a 80# catfish i know it would be ez to get it in. it is a over kill.like fishing with a towtruck............

I have used the Penn International 975 bait casting reel which is a very good real but the cost is expensive. Most guys in this area only see Penn's lower costing reels which is great for the river bit does have a low gear ratio like a winch.
Penn makes one of the farthest, longest casting reels on the market, the Penn 525 Mag.
I casted this reel across are lake at 380 feet and my 3 oz was still a hundred feet in the air. They run off of magnetic brakes.
Penn is now owned by Shakespeare, who bought them this year. Penn has been #1 in Saltwater fishing for several years now.
