i nmake my own as well, i use only 20lb test line ( big game solar green) and make them out of that doubled up and use barrel swivels of course.. leaders are no longer then my float if im fishing on top that is but if i fish the bottom i use one (leader) about 2 ft.. with, depends what size bait i have at that time any where from 1/2 - 1 oz. weight..

I take 3 strainds of 25lbs test line and braid them together and use a 100lbs barrel swivel to tie the main line to thats sounds like a good idea to keep those big shovels from frayin your line and breakin off because ive had problems with that in the past.

i double up 50 pound big game line and tie both side of the lines to the swivel. then you swoop the other side of the loop through the hook.

I make my own also. I use the same 30lb test that i put on my reels but i double the leader so its like a 60lb leader. IT works great.

I use 30lb Penn Fluorocarbon Leader Material, or Hi Seas Fluorocarbon Leader Material. This stuff works great. We use our leaders about 10" long. I never use a leader longer then my float so it does not get tangled up. wow i never thought of that im gonna try that out next time
