The season is over, time for a fire sale. Trade off the veterans for prospects and bring up the guys in AAA.
Untouchable guys
Homer Bailey - He is supposed to be the future ace of the pitching staff.
Brandon Phillips - Best position player on the team, IMO. Gold glove caliber fielding, great speed, hits for average, hits for power. This guy is a super star and should be on the all-star team this year.
Aaron Harang - Excellent, workhorse starting pitcher that is locked up long term.
Bronson Arroyo - Though he has been shaky lately, he is another excellent starter that is locked up long term.
Alex Gonzalez - Great offseason pickup. Excellent fielder that has hit with some power this year.
Matt Belisle - He has made a good transition from the bull pen to the starting rotation. I expect him to have an ever better year next year. Is still arbitration eligible.
Josh Hamilton - Physical freak of nature. Fastest guy on the team. Best fielding and throwing outfielder on the team. Has major power and has shown he can hit at this level. This guy is going to be sick in two year.
Guys with trade value that need to go:
Kyle Lohse - Has been great lately. A team in the race would love to have him as a 4th/5th starter. Will be a free agent next year and the Reds will not try to keep him (will cost too much). Get some prospects for him while he is hot and call a guy up (Bobby Livingston) from AAA.
David Weathers - The Reds 'closer' is the best pitcher in a horrible bull pen. A team in the race could use him for middle relief. Getting up there in age, he doesn't figure into the future of the team.
Scott Hatteberg - Great veteran and locker room guy. Very good lefty gives quality at bats. A contending team could use him as a left handed bat off the bench and spot starter. The future starter at first base is Joey Votto in AAA, time to give him a shot.
Jeff Conine - Read the one on Scott Hatteberg, but change the words 'left' to 'right'.
Ryan Freel - I'm going to get slammed on this one. Can't play everyday because he runs into the stands and the walls to much due to his 'massive hustle'. The future outfield is Josh Hamilton, Jay Bruce, and Drew Stubbs. A contender could use a good utility guy, so let Freel hustle somewhere else.
Trade these guys only if you get a great offer:
Adam Dunn - Hits a homerun, walks, or strikes out. Its nice to have the big bat, but with guys like Stubbs and Bruce coming up soon, you could trade him. I think I'd keep him around another year.
Ken Griffey Jr - Looked fat, lazy and totally lost in right field early this year, but he has turned it around and looks great. I think you keep him another year, but if you get a good offer and the other team takes most of the contract, you trade him. I could see him going to the AL as a DH and spot starting right fielder and first baseman.
Edwin Encarnacion - He shows flashes of brilliance, then falls flat on his face. I think hes going to be a good everyday player, but may need to move to first. Joey Votto is the future at first base (thought the Reds have been experimenting with him in the OF at AAA). I say you keep him unless someone else really wants him. There aren't a lot of options at third base in the minors.
Trade these guys for a dog and shoot the said dog:
Todd Coffey - I've given up on this guy and I'm sick of hear about how he has 'great stuff'. Get someone out.
Mike Stanton - The Reds signed this 40 year old guy to two year $5 million guaranteed contract and now he can't get anyone out. Whoops! Cut him and eat the contract.
Chad Moeller - I don't know why this guy is on the roster. Most pitcher have a better batting average. (Sadly, the starting catcher, David Ross, isn't that much better)
Eric Milton - Must I explain this one>?
The Jury is still out:
David Ross - A lot of things have changed for you in one year. Start hitting.
Gary Majewski - Either you're hurt or you're not, but eventually you have to get someone out. What a horrible trade last year.
Bill Bray - See Majewski, Gary.
Victor Santos - Hasn't shown much, probably someone better in the minors.
Kirk Saarloos - Hasn't shown much, probably someone better in the minors.
Jon Coutlangus - Hasn't shown much, probably someone better in the minors.
Guys with little trade value that I would keep:
Eddie Guardado - Hope he comes back from Tommie John surgery an does well. I think his days as a closer are over though.
Javier Valentin - Good pinch hitter. Bats switch, solid backup.
Juan Castro - Can't hit, but very good fielder. Solid backup and utility guy.
Norris Hopper - Has been playing well with Hamilton and Freel on the DL.
Guess that cover most of the 40 man roster. Thoughts?
