Hey mark, I had the same problem as you did.... I started using 2 of the Bass Pro stops together and it works wonders for me....Spray a lil WD40 on your stops before you attempt to put them on, and if possible use a pair of toe nail clippers to grab the stop and guide them on the line....
I use 30# cajun adavantage and it is pretty thick line, but the toe nail clippers really get the job done without breaking the fragile wire that the stops come on...
As for the beads, my wife was dragging me through a Hobby Lobby one day and to my amazement, they had all the beads,sizes,shapes,colors you could ever want.... and Dirt cheap too..... usually about 200 for a $1...

I prefer the weightless bobbers, The more lead I can put on the float the better the bait stays down where it belongs. The problem I have had with weighted floats is there is not enough wait to hold down a 6 inch yellow belly.
